Course Purpose

Urban Forest Management: Managing Greenspaces for People (FNRM 4501/5501) is a course offered at the University of Minnesota through the Department for Forest Resources. The course is designed for upper level undergraduate and graduate students interested in urban & community forestry, environmental sciences, natural resources, horticulture & landscape architecture, and urban & community planning. Each year the class works with a project partner to address issues in managing urban & community forests and green spaces. This is not a course solely about trees --- it's really about people and communities. The course is led by Dr. Eric North.

Topics of study include:
  • risk assessment and management;
  • inventorying and developing management programs;
  • services and disservices of urban natural resources;
  • minimizing green and gray infrastructure conflicts;
  • equity and inclusion in urban natural resources.​
